Laying Interlocking Penny Tiles
Interlocking penny sheets are designed to connect seamlessly by matching the grooves on each sheet.
Begin by aligning the grooves of the first sheet with the opposite grooves of the next sheet so the pattern appears continuous. Continue laying sheets in a straight, linear direction until you reach a wall or obstacle.
For the next row, rotate the sheet 180 degrees from the previous row and continue aligning the matching grooves as you go. This creates a consistent, interlocking pattern throughout the installation.

Cutting Interlocking Penny Tiles
Some installations will require trimming sheets to fit edges or obstacles.
The mesh backing between pennies can be cut easily with a utility blade on a flat surface.
*Pre-cut penny halves are available for edging.

Adhesive Application
Thinset is the most common adhesive for penny tile installations. Other adhesives may be used, but installers should always test them prior to permanent installation.
Spread adhesive in a thin, even layer using a small V-notch trowel. The adhesive should be applied thin enough so it does not squeeze up between or above the pennies once sheets are pressed down.
As a general rule of thumb, the adhesive layer should be about the thickness of a penny.
When placing sheets, a wooden roller can help flatten the tile and press the mesh fully into the adhesive for an even bond.

Grout Application
Sanded grout is strongly recommended for penny tile installations.
The gaps between pennies vary in size, and unsanded grout is too thin for the widest points.
Apply grout in small, manageable sections. Remove excess grout with a damp sponge within 5 minutes.
Wipe in circular motions and rinse the sponge frequently — especially when using dark grout colors.
Do NOT allow grout to dry on the surface of the pennies, as it can be extremely difficult to remove once cured.

Finish and Seal Coat
A protective seal coat is strongly recommended for all penny tile installations.
U.S. pennies are made of metals that can oxidize or tarnish naturally. Without a sealant, color changes and patina will occur over time.
Recommended finishes depend on the installation location:
Walkable Surfaces (Floors
A two-part pourable epoxy provides a durable, clear finish when correctly applied.
Epoxy should be installed by a licensed and experienced installer.
Vertical Surfaces (Backsplashes, Walls, etc
A water-based polyurethane can be used as an alternative.
Apply multiple thin coats to build a durable finish.
Polyurethane is less durable than epoxy but works well on vertical applications.
